About Our Reading Rooms

The Ben Carson Reading Project is the second program of the Carson Scholars Fund.  The primary purpose of the program is to provide funding and support to local schools so that they can create a nuturing environment for a child to feel safe and secure as they develop their reading skills.  The Reading Room is decorated with attractive, eye catching artwork based on Dr. Carson's "THINK BIG" philosophy.  Each room is filled with hundreds of books for students to explore from a variety of authors, topics, and genres.  The Ben Carson Reading Project brings students and their families together to raise the awareness of the importance of reading.  The Ben Carson Reading Project nutures the entire school and allows students to develop the skills necessary to become lifetime readers and learners.

The first Ben Carson Reading Room was established in 2000 at Hall's Cross Roads Elementary School in Aberdeen, Maryland.  Since that time, the Carson Scholars Fund has established 41 Reading Rooms.  Reading Rooms can be found in Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland. Missouri, and Pennsylvania.  To visit some of our Reading Rooms, view the Our Sites page.

Through the generosity of Bank of America, Reading Rooms are currently under construction at the following Baltimore City Public Schools:  Franklin Square Elementary/Middle, John Eager Howard Elementary, and Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle.  The Kellogg Company is also proud to sponsor a Ben Carson Reading Room.  This room will be the first Reading Room located in Dr. Carson's home state of Michigan.  All four Reading Rooms are scheduled to open in the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.  Be sure to check the CSF website for Reading Room opening dates.
